Birthday Cake Ideas Melbourne: 24 Designs With Real Prices
Twenty-four real birthday cake ideas from our Burwood East studio, for kids and adults, each with a real starting price and the notice we need.
Updated September 2026. Every cake below is one we have actually made in our Burwood East studio, and every price is a real starting price including GST.
"Birthday cake ideas" is one of those searches that returns a thousand photos and no useful answers. You find a cake you love, and then you cannot tell whether it costs $150 or $600, whether anyone in Melbourne can actually make it, or how long before the party you need to ask. This guide is the opposite of that. Twenty-four ideas, grouped by who the cake is for, each with a real starting price and the notice we need to make it.
How to choose a birthday cake, in three questions
Before the pretty pictures, three quick decisions save most of the back-and-forth:
- How many people are eating it? A 5-inch serves 10 to 15 and starts at $165. A 6-inch is our most popular size, serves 15 to 25, and starts at $220. A 7-inch is $260, an 8-inch $350, and an 8-inch tall $395. Two tier starts at $450.
- When is the party? We need a minimum of two days for anything from the online range, and two to four weeks for a fully custom design. Order by Thursday 10pm for the coming weekend.
- Keepsake or all edible? Many of our kids' cakes use sculpted figurines that are keepsakes rather than edible. Parents tend to love this — the topper survives the party and lives on a shelf.
If the budget question is the one you actually want answered first, we have written it out in full in how much does a custom cake cost in Melbourne.
Birthday cake ideas for kids
Our kids birthday cakes collection is the busiest part of the studio. These are the themes we are asked for most.
Dinosaur
blue is a dinosaur cake with sculpted figurines, textured buttercream and deep green foliage detail. She suits dinosaur-mad birthdays from about age three upwards, and the palette, name and age topper are all made to your brief. From $285.
Safari and jungle animals
leon brings safari energy in taupe and latte with brushed watercolour texture and a keepsake lion topper — from $250. arlo's is the jungle version, a cheerful group of animals and a bright little sun, built for first birthdays and toddler parties, from $360. meadow takes the same idea to the farm: textured buttercream, scattered hay and keepsake animal figurines, from $305.
Vehicles and construction
hudson is a digger and construction cake — colours, vehicles, name and age all personalised, from $265. xavier is a train theme in powder blue with tiny bunting and a keepsake train topper, from $300. marlowe is the storybook version: a hand-painted bus, fondant road signs and soft woodland detail, from $345. Every panel on marlowe is painted by hand, so the scene can change to suit your theme.
Sports
miles is our sports cake, finished with handcrafted balls and a strong personalised centre number. Football, basketball, cricket, soccer, or all of them at once — tell us the sports and the age and we build the cake around them. From $255.
First birthdays
First birthday cakes want softness rather than primary brights. winnie is a honey bear and honeycomb design in dreamy tones, from $300. finn is a balloon and teddy bear cake in soft ivory with gold star detail, from $285. levi is sage green with a smiley face topper and buttercream pine trees, from $220, for parties where the palette needs to stay calm and modern. peter is a garden bunny in powder blue with hand-painted illustration, carrots, butterflies and a picket fence, from $295, with the name hand-piped in gold script.
Under the sea
iris is the dreamer of the sea — a sleepy lavender octopus, a friendly whale and soft pastel ocean tones, from $365. mariana is her quieter sister, dreamy pastels with shimmering pearls and sea treasures, from $285.
Cow print and farmyard
millie is all black patches, a sculpted cow topper, a grass border and scattered daisies, from $250.
Birthday cake ideas for adults
Grown-up birthdays in Melbourne have moved firmly towards vintage piping and sculptural buttercream. Our vintage cakes collection is where most of these live.
Vintage and Lambeth piping
cleo is the most architectural cake we make: hand-piped Lambeth pillars and botanical florals in sage, latte and rust, from $175. She suits milestone birthdays, engagements and weddings. The piping is done by hand on the day, so the palette can shift to match your styling.
lola is the loud one — pink ruffles, hand-piped Lambeth detail, satin bows and fresh cherries, from $235. penny is pastel with playful piping, glossy cherries and confetti, from $200. valentina is the moody version: deep cocoa burgundy buttercream, sculpted piping and a soft shimmer finish, from $235. evelyn is soft pink with hand-piped roses, from $190.
Floral
Our floral cakes range from the delicate to the sculptural. ophelia is a woodland garden in hand-piped florals and tiny sculpted mushrooms on textured ivory, from $175. elodie is a sculptural 3D floral cake in warm parchment and terracotta, from $175. dahlia is pure garden-party, from $170. vera is the soft, fresh-flower one, from $190.
Understated and sculptural
Not every birthday wants piping. etta is soft sage buttercream with clean vertical lines, gentle draping and scattered mustard rose petals, from $165 — our most affordable cake and one of the most requested. elowen is soft, sculptural and earthy with flowing texture, dried citrus and rich berry accents, from $275. clementine is buttercream swirls with blood oranges, raspberry compote and orchid detail, from $255. isolde is the bold one: cinnamon warmth, burnt orange, glossy chocolate swirls and tart raspberries, from $275. colette is dark and elegant, black with deep burgundy roses, from $235.
Bows, berries and gingham
clara is blush bows cascading down a pastel base with delicate daisies, from $255. ottilie is strawberry blush with vintage shell piping, gingham bows and hand-placed strawberries, from $255. lottie is the strawberry gingham cake with ribbon bows and daisies, from $205. lila is soft pink and full of summer strawberries, from $180.
Flavours, and what to pick
Every cake above comes in Classic Vanilla, Classic Chocolate or Chocolate Coffee sponge. Vanilla and chocolate fillings are included. Raspberry compote, fresh strawberry, salted caramel, chocolate ganache, cookies and cream and Biscoff are premium fillings at $15 to $30. For a children's party, classic vanilla with vanilla filling is the safest crowd-pleaser. For an adult birthday, chocolate coffee sponge with salted caramel is the one people message us about afterwards.
A note before you plan: we do not offer eggless, gluten-free, dairy-free or vegan cakes. We do not use nuts as listed ingredients, but our kitchen cannot guarantee against traces.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a birthday cake in Melbourne?
At Bakeology Studios a 5-inch starts at $165 and serves 10 to 15. Our most popular size, the 6-inch, starts at $220 and serves 15 to 25. Across Melbourne, custom birthday cakes generally start between $150 and $250 for a single tier.
How far in advance should I order a birthday cake?
Two days is our minimum for cakes from the online range. Fully custom designs need two to four weeks. If the party is on the weekend, order by Thursday 10pm.
What is the most popular birthday cake theme in Melbourne right now?
For adults, vintage Lambeth piping — cleo, lola and penny are our three most requested. For children, dinosaurs and safari animals, followed by construction vehicles.
Can you copy a cake I found on Instagram or Pinterest?
Send it through and we will tell you honestly what we can and cannot match. We will usually suggest a version of it in our own hand rather than a direct copy — it tends to come out better, and it stays yours.
Do you deliver birthday cakes across Melbourne?
Yes. Delivery is free within 10 kilometres of our Burwood East studio, then charged by distance band across greater Melbourne, with a $90 minimum order. Pickup is available seven days, 7am to 10pm.
Are the cake toppers edible?
On most of our kids' cakes the figurines are keepsakes rather than edible — the lion on leon, the bear on winnie, the train on xavier, the animals on meadow and arlo's. Names and ages are hand-piped or made to your brief.
