Kids Birthday Cakes Melbourne: 20 Designs With Real Prices

Hand-decorated kids birthday cakes, made to order in Burwood East and delivered free within ten kilometres.

Twenty cakes sit in our junior edit, and they start at $180. This is the whole list, with real starting prices, so you can work out what fits before you enquire rather than after.

The junior edit, by price

Prices are for the smallest size of each design. Every one of them scales up if you need more servings.

Under $230

• lila — from $180. The gentlest one, and the most affordable. Soft colour, simple finish.
• lottie — from $205. Pastel and playful without a character on it.
• levi — from $220. Clean, bold colour blocking. Works for a first birthday or a tenth.

$250 to $300

• leon — from $250. Chocolate-led and decidedly not pink.
• millie — from $250.
• miles — from $255.
• clara — from $255.
• ottilie — from $255.
• hudson — from $265.
• blue — from $285. The dinosaur cake. Far and away our most-asked-for boys' design.
• finn — from $285.
• mariana — from $285.
• peter — from $295.

Above $300

• meadow — from $305.

Dinosaurs, sports and everything else

The three themes we are asked for most are dinosaurs, sport, and a single strong colour with the child's name on it. blue covers the first, and our dinosaur cake guide has his sizes, prices and what a custom dinosaur involves. For sport, we work from the club colours rather than a logo — it looks better and it is honest about what we are allowed to reproduce. For the third, almost any cake in the edit can be remade in a different palette; that is a colour change, not a custom build, and it is priced as the original.

What size for how many children

Children's parties need fewer servings than people expect, because the cake is rarely the only sweet thing on the table. A 5-inch from $165 serves 10 to 15 and is usually right for a small party. A 6-inch from $220 serves 15 to 25 and is our most popular size. A 7-inch is from $260 and an 8-inch from $350. How much notice

Two days minimum. For a weekend party, get the order in by Thursday 10pm. A fully custom design — a new character, a sculpted shape, colours we have not used before — wants two to four weeks. School holidays and the run-up to Christmas book out earliest, so if the party is in those windows, ask sooner than you think you need to.

Delivery and pickup

Pickup is from the Burwood East studio, seven days, 7am to 10pm. Delivery is free within ten kilometres, which covers Box Hill, Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, Blackburn, Forest Hill, Vermont and Nunawading. Beyond that, delivery runs $30 to $85 in ten-kilometre bands with a $90 minimum order — the delivery guide has the detail, including Doncaster and Ringwood.

If you are collecting it yourself: flat boot, not the seat, and keep it out of the sun. Buttercream is more forgiving than it looks, but not on a hot afternoon.

Flavours children actually eat

Classic Vanilla is the safest choice for a room full of children. Classic Chocolate is the other one. Chocolate Coffee is the third sponge and is better suited to the adults. Vanilla and chocolate fillings are included; raspberry compote, fresh strawberry, salted caramel, chocolate ganache, cookies and cream and Biscoff are premium and add $15 to $30. See our flavours.

What we do not make

We do not make eggless, gluten-free, dairy-free or vegan cakes. If a child at the party has one of those requirements, we are not the right studio for that cake and we would rather tell you now. Nuts are not a listed ingredient in anything we make, but the studio is not nut-free and traces are possible — worth knowing if there is a nut allergy in the room.
